In this inspiring and delightful conversation, Wendy and Katie discuss the impact of teaching junior high, Katie’s experience being nominated for a Grammy, and share five key takeaways that both parents and teachers can use to support their middle schoolers.
I was honored to give the keynote address, "Notes from the Choir Room," which concluded with our first ever Olentangy Schools Staff Choir at our Opening Day Convocation!
I graduated from The Ohio State University exactly 20 years ago. It was such an honor to chat with the alumni magazine about my journey as a music education major and masters student and about how much I love to spread joy through music. I'm always happy to contribute to a story with a positive focus. We need more of that reading material!

My dream to become a music teacher began exactly 30 years ago and it got stronger every year thanks to my incredible music and drama teachers in Solon, Ohio!
Shanahan is the real sunshine-- the students, the staff, the families, the entire historic and precious building. I'm just drawing back the curtains so the world can see!
One of the highlights of this year was meeting 2020 Grammy Music Educator Mickey Smith Jr. When we sat down to chat for his “See the Sound” podcast back in the fall we became fast friends! Mickey’s mission is to help us see the sound, and mine is to help us see the SUN!

I am proud to be in my 23rd year of teaching vocal music in central Ohio. After graduating from Solon High School, I received my Bachelors and Masters of Music Education at The Ohio State University. I began my teaching career at Marysville Middle School and High School where I proudly tripled student involvement in the vocal music programs. I currently teach vocal music at Olentangy Shanahan Middle School in Lewis Center, Ohio.
Ever since sixth grade, I have felt that we can see our biggest potential during the countless moments where we can contribute to something bigger than ourselves. It is such a joy to spread that message to my students each day! Over the past 15 years I have presented clinics at three Ohio Music Educators Association Professional Conferences. I enjoy working with talented 6th through 8th grade vocalists every day because I discovered my love for choir when I was in middle school. My music teaching philosophy is centered on the idea that “music is for everyone!”
